WiMax, The 4G Wireless Internet Standard
You may have heard about WiMax. You may be wondering what it is and how fast it delivers the internet.

WiMax Works FAST even miles from a hub
WiMax is a very fast and powerful wireless technology that can be used to send signals for several miles beyond current 3G options. WiMax is 4G (4th generation) mobile internet. WiMax technology can be put into a laptop, netbook, cell phone or even in a tiny computer chip. WiMax lets us finally roam all across the country and take high speed internet with us.
Since WiMax utilizes existing cell towers to send the signal it costs less to deliver. Many of the cell towers that exist now will soon have WiMax modules. WiMax truly is the high speed wireless internet technology of the future.
How is WiMax Different?
How is WiMax different from bluetooth? How is WiMax different from WiFi (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)? How is WiMax different from GSM, TDMA, EDGE, GPRS, CDMA or the 3G products like EVDO, HSDPA & UMTS?
It’s simple
Bluetooth was meant for very short range / low bandwidth communication and is suitable for headsets, keyboards, computer mice and the like. The max rate for the fastest bluetooth technology is under 1 or 2 Mpbs. The max range is normally under 100 ft. Bluetooth and WiMax have very little in common, except they are both wireless.
WiFi or plain old “Wireless” was meant for home (and maybe office) use. A typical Wi-Fi router using 802.11b or 802.11g with a stock antenna might have a range of 120 ft indoors and 300 ft outdoors. While 802.11n can deliver network speeds over 100 Mbps but only for short distances. Most websites cannot even send data at that speed. Usually 802.11n is used for home networks to quickly move data between 2 computers. It is not a mobile technology and therefore does not truly compare with all of the features of WiMax.
GSM, TDMA, EDGE, GPRS, CDMA the 3G products like EVDO, HSDPA & UMTS are all mobile phone technologies that have been used for wireless internet to some degree or another. The fastest that any of these go in real world use is around 1.7 Mbps and they max out at around 3 miles. This is the closes comparison to WiMax because these were meant to be wireless data networks. If you could ditch your Verizon Aircard that maxes out at 1.5 Mbps and get a WiMax card that got 5 or 8Mbps for less money wouldn’t you do so?
WiMax is faster, goes farther and costs less than any comparable wireless data network.
